The Latest Reviews about the Nature Lodge Finca Los Caballos

“Beautiful...”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
This is one of the most beautiful properties that we stayed at when we were in Costa Rica but sadly we stayed for only one night. This hotel is definitely off the beaten path and is kind of difficult to find but that is probably us arriving at night.

The only word that can be used to describe the hotel is spiritual, but please be aware of two items:

1. The rooms DO NOT have air conditioning
2. The rooms are not closed but are naturally ventilated, such as no glass on windows but rather wood window covers and mosquito nets for true nature experience. This also means that you have no privacy even though the cabins are pretty far apart.

“we wish we were there right now”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
The new owners did an excellent job with remodeling the place. My wife and I had a great time there. We like to wander, so for us hotels are just places to sleep. Not this one. We spent quite a lot of time on the property, relaxing in hammocks, watching toucans, drinking cold beer. We liked the modern design of the property, the location (on a hill with view to the sea, far away from the busy Moctezuma), the jungle view from our room, drinking coffee in the morning on the terrace, too much to list here. Don't miss the horseback rides: the surroundings are amazing and the horses can move pretty briskly. I agree with another reviewer that dinner can be a bit pricey. Overall, highly recommended.

“A fantastic time at a wonderful place....”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
I am so sad to say that I was only able to stay at the Nature Lodge for 2 days!!!!!

Room was simple, clean and perfect! Fresh flowers brough to the room in a big beautiful vase, flowers over the bed and flowers in the bathroom were a great touch for me.

Pre-made CD's (3) were so perfect for the environment I kept playing them over and over again.

Outdoor shower - NEED I SAY MORE!

Gourmet dinner (both nights) was nothing shy of delicious. The menu changed nightly which was awesome. And by the way, YOU get to decide if you want to eat in the dining area, veranda OR your personal room/balcony

Staff - a little difficult in communication with them but they were very sweet and very accomodating.

I got a chance to talk with the owner for a bit regarding the renovation that he completed to make the property so beautiful. He was so kind as to even show me the "before" pictures. All I could say is WOW! What a wonderful job.

It must be nice to live in Paradise! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone! It was a very romantic stay for my husband and myself.

“Wonderful holiday”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
The hotel is marvellous. We were received friendly, the service was excellent. The rooms have all a marvellous terrace, most with wonderful view over the jungle on the Pacific. The equipment of the rooms is very tasteful and individual, wonderful, especially the bathroom. We spent our time on the Finca with our 5-year-old son who felt fine, too.
In our opinion, the restaurant is one of the best in the further environment of Montezuma. I never enjoyed such fine prepared fish before in my life, the Menus are combined very well. The breakfast is very varied, fresh, with a lot of fruit and tastes great. Also our son always love the restaurant, because the staff in the kitchen understood to deal always flexibly with childlike special wishes. In Europe this restaurant would be a confidential tip which would not remain confidential long, because its quality would get around itself fast over large distances.
The horse tours offered by the Finca, were nicely selected, trained on the riders excellently coordinatedly in the degree of difficulty and outstanding guided. A highlight of our vacation.
The owner of the hotel, as well as his employees are convincing by engagement and big hospitality. We can only recommend this hotel, with his staff and the nature around. We plan even to come again in April. Finca Los Caballos is super great!

“Pleasant but Still a Work in Progress”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
We stayed at the Finca los Caballos for 4 nights over New Year's Eve. While there were no serious flaws at the Finca, there is still room for improvement.

I had arranged a month before we came to Costa Rica to have a driver from the hotel meet us at the Tambor airstrip. However, when we arrived, no one was there. A friendly taxi driver at the airstrip agreed to call our hotel and found out that something had come up, and no one was available to pick us up, so we took the taxi. Ultimately, the taxi was cheaper than what the hotel was going to charge ($25 vs. $30), but we ended up sitting at the airport for an extra 40 minutes that could have been avoided.

Once we arrived at the hotel, the check-in process was very smooth, and the man at reception was very friendly, although his english was somewhat limited. Between our spanish and his english, though, everything was fine. We were shown to our room (#8), which was a jungle view room. The room was clean, and there were screens on all the bathroom windows and the upper part of the wall behind our bed. All the window panels had shutters that could be closed, but only one had a screen, so we had to close 2 of the three before dusk to prevent bug bites at night. One night we forgot to close the shutters early, and both of us woke up with quite a few bites. Unfortunately, the nights we were there, there wasn't much of a breeze, which meant the air in the room could be stifling at the end of a hot day. The ceiling fan helped, but my husband is very sensitive to heat, so he had several uncomfortable nights. Our room had a hammock and a rocking chair outside the door looking out towards the jungle, and we used them both quite a lot, as it was often much cooler outside than in our room at night. The bathroom was clean and roomy, and had a very large shower with natural stone floor, that was interesting, but slightly slippery when wet. Our room was only a stone's throw from the pool, which was convenient, but meant that if there was an especially noisy guest (and there was on our last day at the hotel), you could hear everything seemingly at full volume in our room.

The breakfasts were tasty and simple, and included a variety of baked goods and a main entree that was different each day. The dinner menu was usually posted early, so that you could make a reservation if you were going to stay. The food was good, the ingredients fresh, and the menus inventive. The restaurant is open air and has two dining areas- one right next to the kitchen, and one down on a deck. The only main problem (which was unfortunately severe for us), was that there was no designated smoking area. I am violently allergic to cigarette smoke, and many of the guests and the hotel staff were smokers, so at meal times, it was basically impossible, even in an outdoor environment to get away from all the smoke. This meant that every night after dinner, I would end up feeling like I had been hit by a train. It wouldn't be difficult for the owners to designate one of the dining areas as non-smoking, which I think would be a definite improvement.

Also, there were three friendly dogs, one very cute puppy, and at least one cat (someone said they saw another one, but we didn't), who are residents at the hotel. We enjoyed their company, but they were free to circulate around the hotel as they chose, which included passing through the restaurant at mealtimes. While this was not a problem for us (we have 2 dogs at home, so we're used to their company at dinner), I could see how it might put people off. In any case, it's something to be aware of, especially if you have allergies to dogs and/or cats. The cat we met was very friendly, and spent the better part of one evening snoozing in my husband's lap.

Something else to note: we opted not to rent a car during our stay in Costa Rica for a number of reasons. Most of the hotels we chose were therefore under 2km from the center of the towns we chose to visit, so that we could walk into town without a problem. Finca los Caballos is 1.5km outside of Montezuma. It is along a dirt road, which is dusty but not unexpected. What was unexpected is the final descent down into town. We could have benefitted from rappelling equipment. It is absurdly steep and covered in scree. There are blind curves. 4WD vehicles were struggling to get up these hills- that's how steep they are. While the staff at the hotel seemed surprised that we would opt to walk to town, no one actually mentioned why it might not be a good idea. We had asked if we could have a taxi called to take us into town, and were advised that it wasn't really possible and we should take the bus, which only runs every couple of hours, and runs on "Costa Rica Time". We did take the bus down one morning, which was terrifying in and of itself, as the bus was a full size bus, the road is narrow, and the curves are tight, which resulted in oncoming traffic having to back up to allow us to use the entire road to make the turns... In any case, if you're going to Finca los Caballos, either wear some serious hiking boots to walk, rent a car, or get friendly with someone who has rented a car if you want to go into town.

Much of the reason we selected Finca los Caballos was the good reputation of the horses that are kept there. I am an avid rider, and I was looking forward to spending at least a little part of each day with the horses, as they seemed to be a focus of the hotel. When we arrived, however, we found that only extended rides (2 hours and up) were available, and these were only available at certain times of day, due to the heat. I appreciate that the horses were not asked to work in excessively hot conditions, but I was surprised that there were no shorter rides available, even if it was just around the property. The rides were also a bit more expensive than other horseback rides we found in other parts of the country. As a result, I only went riding once. That ride, however, was spectacular. It was a special occasion ride on New Year's Day. We rode on the beach from the town of Montezuma down multiple beaches and through patches of forest around a private reserve to the Cocolito waterfall. Then, we rode back part of the way, dismounted again, had a barbecue, and then got back on the horses and rode back to the hotel on the beach under the light of the full moon. It was lovely. The horses are in very good condition and the tack seemed to fit well. As a horse person myself, I noticed things in the care that were slightly troubling, but no serious signs of abuse or neglect, and certainly nothing a little time with a basic horsemanship book couldn't fix (when we arrived at the waterfall, our horses were severely out of breath, and should have been walked out until they were cool, but instead were tied and left to stand- not excessively horrible, but not proper horsemanship either).

We arranged for one tour through the hotel to Isla Tortuga, which went well- we even got to see humpback whales on the boatride back! Transportation was (thankfully) included to and from the hotel for the tour.

The pool at the hotel was pleasant, although there are only a few lounge chairs available, so we only got lounge chairs one day we were there. I generally opted to stay at our room in the hammock instead of trying to read by the pool, for that reason.

All in all, the new management (of 2 years) is doing a good job of rehabilitating an establishment that, from previous reviewers, seemed to have fallen on hard times. The basics are definitely in place here, and some of the finer points are coming along, but at times, you get the sense that the owners are more interested in "pura vida" than in making your stay really comfortable. A little more attention to detail, and this place could really shine.

“Beautiful Nature Lodge Los Caballos”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
On our Costa Rica tour we stayed at Nature Lodge Los Caballos for three days, and we really enjoyed it. The new owners did a really good job by renovation, so it became a lovely place to stay. The people are so kind, and the kitchen is unbeatable. I loved to watch the tukans, stood up very early in the morning to listen the monkeys roaring and to watch the sunrise. I just felt happy.
Thanks to all the staff, we would like to come again soon, because we had the good feeling to share our stay with a big family.

“Costa Rican Hospitality at it's best”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
The Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos is one of the best places we have stayed in all of our travels. The lodge is absolutely beautiful and our room incredibly comfortable with breathtaking views. The food at the lodge is top notch (we would rate it 4 stars). But the biggest delight was the incredible hospitality and warmth from all the wonderful people working there. It made our trip extremely special.

We highly recommend the Nature Lodge to anyone visiting Montezuma! We loved it so much we are already planning our next Costa Rica trip back there!!

“"Barefoot elegance"”
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
We recently returned from our first visit to Costa Rica. The highlight of the trip was our stay at the Nature Lodge. We booked the hotel because it offered horseback riding. Other than that we knew little about the place. Upon our arival we were more than pleasantly surprised.

It is a beautiful, secluded setting in the jungle. It has only 12 rooms which make it an ideal place to relax. The scenerary is spectacular right which can be viewed right from your your hammock. The wildlife is unique to anyone from the recreational areas of the USA. From monkeys to exotic birds and plants and trees of all varities you can have a great day just listening to the sounds of the jungle while longing around the pool with a glass of wine.

The staff was most helpful and courteous from the waiters to the owners. We also enjoyed the horseback rides which included a breathtaking view of the ocean to a swim in a river pool at the base of a cascading waterfall. Riding is adaptable for all levels of experience.

The rooms were clean and the campus was truly beautiful which fits their description of "barefoot elegance." The rates were more than reasonable. The highlight was the excellent meals prepared by a German chef who could practice her culinary skills at the finest cafes in the world.

We would definately recommend the Nature Lodge!!!

Die Finca bietet u. a. Wellnessangebote und Reiten an. Vor allem das Reiten bietet ein Angebot für alle Schwierigkeitsstufen und wird extrem professionell und sicher durchgeführt. Ein Urlaubsort und ein Hotel das nur zu empfehlen ist.

My best place in Costa Rica
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
I stayed 10 days there and it was my best time in Costa Rica.
It's absolutely fantastic there: nature pure! No traffic noise at all, just birds, monkeys and the sea at night.
I did several horse ridings with excellent provided horses, spectacular views and swimming on the way.
The owners and the whole staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the kitchen is offers excellent mostly European food. Also the breakfast is superb.
go there, you will not regret it.

A wonderful place
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
I was there for several nights and I think it is an enthusiastic place. The hotel is located in the middle of the nature, framed of wonderful plants and animals. Woke up in the morning and saw monkeys close to the window of my room having breakfast. There is also an excellent restaurant. The people are great, very friendly and they always look that you get the best service. It is really a good combination of being in the nature and to be in a hotel where you feel at home.

Wonderful stay all around!
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
This hotel is a small, wonderfully decorated, well-kept place with wonderful people. Without exception, from the owners, to the managers, to the cooks, this place oozed with personal attention and friendliness, making my wife and I want to stay for as long as we could.

Importantly, we found that hotel prices in the Montezuma area are priced far higher than those in other parts of Costa Rica, and we were initially surprised at the price tag. However, the Nature Lodge is truly the best value for the money and was well worth it.

I would say, however, as I did to the hotel managers, that screens on the doors and windows are necessary. Since the place does not have AC (you may or may not feel that this is necessary, we personally did, but understand the hotel's philosophy on this matter) everything remains open. This is a wonderful feeling and experience, hearing and feeling the nature all around. However, many uninvited insects made themselves welcome in the room.

I would strongly comment that although the screen issue is important, DO NOT let that keep you from visiting this gem of a hotel. You will not regret your stay here.

Fantastic hotel
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos
We stayed at Nature Lodge for two nights and absolutely loved it. We almost canceled our reservations based on some bad online reviews but decided to give it a try anyway.

The hotel is under new management and has been remodeled, so I think you can disregard reviews prior to 2006. The setting is beautiful, the rooms are simple yet comfortable and clean, the staff is friendly and the food is excellent. It is a much nicer setting than staying in Montezuma, which is quite noisy and busy. We took advantage of the horseback riding excursion and would highly recommend it. The horses are very well cared for. Overall the price is extremely reasonable, especially since it includes breakfast. We subsequently spent 5 days at the Marriott resort in Jaco and felt ripped off the entire time. We paid exorbitant rates for everything and yet we experienced none of the charm or authenticity that we found at Nature Lodge. It was the highlight of our trip.

Great time in Nature Lodge
Recommended!
Nature Lodge Finca los Caballos

Planned a 1 or 2 nights stay, and ended up 3 nights, just resting and enjoying the place- hardly ever taking the trouble to visit busy Montezuma.

There is indeed a new, enthusiastic management (a German and Costa-Rican partners) who turned this place to a lovely intimate spot with a lot of personal care for the guests.

The lodge is not on the beach. You can see the sea far beyond the forest that surrounds the place, filled with monkeys, birds, butterflies etc etc.

Our room was big and convenient. (there are about 4 of this kind and the rest are smaller) The large balcony facing the open view- a real treat. Pity there is no AC, but with open windows at night, it was OK.

Great kitchen produces high level European style meals.

The small pool - a real pearl - the best place to cool off with a drink surrounded by all that green.

Had a real good horse riding trip from the lodge.

Encantador!
