First disclaimer- I used Marriott points to stay here for 7 days which I greatly appreciate but I tried to write this from the perspective of someone who paid for a room.

First disclaimer- I used Marriott points to stay here for 7 days which I greatly appreciate but I tried to write this from the perspective of someone who paid for a room.

Whether you love this place or merely find it a really nice hotel will depend on what you are looking for in your travels.

The Good

The hotel is very nice but it is actually no nicer than other high end hotels where I have stayed in C. and S. America. All of those have been far less expensive. The service is great. Attentive, friendly but not the fawning, sycophants you sometimes get at nicer hotels. The pool and grounds are beautiful. The food was excellent and not that pricey for a nice hotel in a tropical location.

The Bad

You are really isolated. Kind of true to form for Marriott resorts. You have to work at getting out, especially if you don't want to go on one of their cruise ship type tours. Get a car or grab a cab and strike out on your own. The FREE shuttle to Jaco is not. Not expensive but still annoying. My first room was huge but the noisiest room I can remember having. The graciously gave me another on the end.

Indifferent

The hotel does not see to know what it wants to be. It functions like a destination resort with golf, tennis, casino etc but has no beach concessions. Great place to kayak, or sail but these are not available. Walk into Playa Herradura for kayaks at least. Also much cheaper fishing rates in Playa Herradura than in the marina.

Suggestions

Great place to go and relax and maybe sample a bit of Costa Rica. Learn SOME spanish for goodness sake. Take a regular cab from the airport -cost is $90. They are super clean. Get away from the resort and make your own tour(see learn some Spanish above) Get a room with a balcony away from the pool. Maybe one on the ends.
