The Bungalows at Los Mangos Hotel

The bungalows are scattered under the cool shadow of mango trees and just in front of the ocean. Don't be surprised to see animals like: monkeys, raccoons, squirrels, iguanas, tucans and more. The owner has designed the bungalows to resemble the architecture found in Bali, connected by walking roads, the buildings have an octagonal structure, made of "Nazareno" wood with cathedral ceilings and wide roofed porches.

Swimming pool Jacuzzi and more at Los Mangos Hotel

Enjoy our scenic pool. A Natural design in the middle of the tropical garden. Relax in the Jacuzzi, cool off under the rocky waterfall and get a tan laying on comfortable deck chairs, with tables and beach umbrellas.

Yoga & Gym at Los Mangos Hotel

Yoga classes are offered on a regular basis in the pavilion overlooking the pool and the ocean. The wooden-floored pavilion is also available for yoga retreats or workshops.

In order to keep the natural environment, the fresh from the mango trees shadows and the all day breeze from the Pacific Ocean, you won't find air conditioning in the rooms, only fans.

The drive from San José to Puntarenas takes about two hours along the Pan-American road.

In Puntarenas there are two ferry terminals that connect to Paquera:

- The old terminal at the dock behind the market where the "Lancha" departs. This lancha is for foot and bike passengers only. The Lancha connects with the Paquera-Montezuma bus.

- It is also possible to fly directly from San José to Playa Tambor, leaving from the international airport, with SANSA or NATUREAIR airlines.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Good place to stay in Montezuma"

Great location across the road from the ocean. About a 5-10 minute walk from town, this takes you away from the noise. Beautiful grounds, pool ok with palms, iguanas, great views, shady area. Close to hiking trail up to a waterfall (loved that!). Bungalows were nice & comfortable, in the shade with hammocks on the decks (cost around $70 a night). 2-story building was inexpensive but we wouldn't stay there again. Rooms were small and hot with funky beds. Bare ceiling light bulb. Shared bath. But, if you are a young traveler going cheap, they'd be just fine. Ocean view. After 2 nights in the 2-story building a bungalow opened up and we were glad to pay the extra money for the room, private bath and privacy. I'd stay in the bungalows again and have thought about having a friends/family get-together there.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Wonderful Yoga Retreat"

We stayed at Los Mangos as part of a yoga retreat and it was very nice. As most reviews mention, the bungalows are the better choice for accommodations. They are beautiful and private with hammocks and rocking chairs. You can hear the waves crashing on the shore below. The bungalows also have a small fridge which is nice to keep drinks and snacks in the room. The pool is nicely landscaped and offers views of the ocean in the distance. The studio is made of tropical hardwood and open on all sides with views of the grounds and the ocean. The hotel is a short stroll to the very enchanting town of Montezuma. Also, the very helpful host, Dagmar will set up a variety of activities such as horseback riding and surf lessons. I would certainly return to Los Mangos.

As part of our package we had lunch and dinner at Playa de Los Artistas. The food at “Playa de Los Artistas” was amazing however the service was not very good. I do understand that the pace is different in Costa Rica and relaxing and not rushing through meals is encouraged, however, we would sit without a beverage for over 20 minutes and sometimes over an hour for our food. Perhaps because we were part of a group we were overwhelming but they knew the time we were coming every evening. Nevertheless, the food was some of the best I have ever had including the freshest fish, salads, avocado, veggies and cheeses.

Some people mention in their reviews about only having screens and maybe having an ant in their room and I have to respond. Most hotels in Costa Rica only have screens, unless they have a/c. Bugs, well, you are in the middle of the rain forest. If you are looking for a Hilton, stay at one or better yet, just don't travel to foreign countries if you want American hotels and MacDonald’s, just stay in America.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Not that bad"

Was part of a yoga retreat so we may have received more attentive service. Many stayed in bungalows that looked pretty cool but the reviews were that they were dark and buggy. I stayed on the 2nd floor of the main building and thought it was fine. The shower was always hot, rooms cleaned daily, fresh towels always available, great porch overlooking the ocean with nice leather rockers. Not the Ritz but didn't expect it. Maybe it was the season but the breeze coupled with both ceiling and standing fans provided plenty of ventilation and no bugs. Great location near but not in the middle of everything.

Down side - the yoga pavilion could have used a good cleaning, the lack of any place to clean off dusty, dirty feet made everything dirtier then necessary, the waterfall in the pool was rarely on - minor but noteworthy

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "peaceful and perfectly located"

We spend a week at Los Mangos, attending a yoga retreat, and had the best time.....the garden is wonderful with howler monkeys and mango trees and a beautiful swimming pool with Jacuzzi. The bungalows are very private and romantic, shattered between the mangos trees, I loved lying in the hammock and reading my book, it was very very peaceful, yet only 5 minutes walking distance to the village. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the yoga pavilions a dream to practice. The ocean is across the street, so you hear the waves as you practice. Also the best restaurant in town, Playa De Los Artistas, is right across the street, what else could you ask for? I would definitely come back and stay here again!!!!

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: Hotel Los Mangos: "UGH!"

In Let's Go, this was described as luxurious--it was a FAR cry from that. Our room was in the main building and for a price that seemed expensive ($70), we have one bare light bulb in the room, they never changed sheets or towels, the bathroom flooded each time we showered, and the noise from people walking above was unbearable. Also, the reception staff could not have been less helpful. I'm sure there must be better hotels in town.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Hated It!"

Yes, the grounds are very pretty. The pool was super - monkeys added to the fun. BUT - DO NOT , I repeat, DO NOT waste your money by booking a room in the youth hostel style cinder block "hotel". Zero ventilation, except for the ceiling fan which regularly goes out of commission during the night due to frequent power outages. Occasional hot water - lots of bugs, paper thin walls, and God forbid you get a room on the lower floor. The people above can sound as though they are bowling. We spent the first night in a bottom floor room, switched to an upper floor room the next day. After waking up to a group meeting in front of our window at 6 am (talking loudly, no glass on the windows, just screens) we decided to cut our stay short (by 5 days) and move hotels to the El Jardin (which we loved. EXCELLENT place!). Los Mangos did not refund ANY of our money, we should have made a mental note upon checking in that full payment was required up front. Granted, the bungalows at Los Mangos looked pretty cool but beware the ant invasion at certain times of year. The walk to town was nice, the area the hotel is in is peaceful and Playa des Los Artistes is an amazing restaurant. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone that I wish to remain friends with...

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Best mid-range bungalows in Montezuma!"

I don't know how anyone could complain about the bungalows at Los Mangos. They are gorgeous, inside and out, made of hardwood, and a cool octagonal shape. They have two rocking chairs and a hammock on each porch. Some have a great view of the ocean, and are up a small hill towards the jungle. There were some iguanas living in the 'eaves' of ours; the hotel owners said that is common (it is the jungle, after all). All we heard were their toenails now and then; they were not in the bungalow, but rather in the eaves. There are mini fridges in the bungalows; I don't know why the website doesn't advertise this.

The hotel is on a semi-wooded property, it is really beautiful. The pool is great, and there is a Jacuzzi as well. If you are looking for a step up from all the hostel-like places all over Montezuma, this is definitely the way to go. We charged $65 a night, which I think is great. You can't get anything as cool as a Los Mangos bungalow for that price in Montezuma, and the next step up in 'luxury' is bungalows at Luz de Mono for $100-120, then Amour de Mar and Ylang have bungalows for $170. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "So-So"

We had seen the website and thought this place looked cute. The bungalows were very physically attractive. The wood is nice, but they were very dark inside. There wasn't a lot of light coming in and the grounds are covered by these huge trees. The mango trees were dropping ripe fruit everywhere and so the whole place had a stench going on. The pool was gorgeous and warm, I made it in on the last day. The whole experience was OK. My boyfriend didn't care for Montezuma in general, so that colored his experience even more. If I came back, I think I would stay somewhere else.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Wonderfully private bungalows and howler monkeys galore"

Loved the very private bungalows of Los Mangos! We stayed at the second highest one up the hill and could just barely see the bungalow next to us through the mango trees. We had a perfect view of the Pacific over the treetops and could barely hear cars on the road below. While the single room bungalow has two beds, more than two people would be tripping over each other because the beds fill the room. The bathroom is admittedly cruddy. The mini fridge was a wonderful amenity and can be stocked with supplies from the Montezuma supermarket. The wraparound balcony has two hardwood and leather rockers that were so comfortable we went searching for one to buy! We found one at Cafe Britt's San Jose airport shop. There's a beautiful pool area where you'll hear the resident howlers every afternoon around 4:00pm. Don't worry about there being no restaurant; Amor de Mar five minutes down the road does fabulous breakfasts in a stunning outdoor dining area overlooking the Pacific and Amor de Mar's famous lawn. We ate all other meals in Montezuma.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "We did not love the bungalow"

We stayed at Los Mangos for 1 night. We were in a bungalow while my sister-in-law and her friend stayed in the motel-like building. While the room in the bungalow was somewhat attractive (it did have screens on the windows!), the bathroom was falling apart. The lid to the toilet tank sat precariously on the tank and where two of the shower walls should have come together in one corner, they didn't, so there was a large gap showing rotting wood behind. On the plus side, the bed was fairly comfortable and we were cool enough with the fan going. There used to be a restaurant on the premises, but it's no longer operating. So there was no place close-by to get ice for drinks, although a 10 minute walk into town would have done the trick if we'd been up for it. We found the young women who were at the front desk (if you could call it that) to be unfriendly and not particularly helpful. My sister-in-law wanted to pay for her room in cash, but they had no change to give her - and it was only the equivalent of a few dollars.

That said, the grounds were very attractive and the pool was quite beautiful. There is a wonderful restaurant nearby (also mentioned in another review) where we had the best meal of our trip - the Playa des Artistes.

I would definitely not return to this hotel.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "We got comfy here."

A friend and I just returned from Costa Rica. We stayed 5 nights at Hotel Los Mangos and had really "settled in" when it was time to leave. The grounds and pool are beautiful. The bungalows are fairly basic but are spaced far enough apart to allow for privacy. Each bungalow has a deck/veranda with 2 rocking chairs and a hammock and that was oh so perfect. The baths need a little TLC and a basic continental breakfast would be a plus for the price but the staff is nice and we truly enjoyed our home away from home. I would definitely return.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "A nice choice, if you choose the bungalows"

My wife and I just returned from Costa Rica last night and spent 2 nights at Los Mangos. I have to agree with the reviewer below, the regular rooms in the multi-unit building leave something to be desired. Both and my wife were bitten by mosquitoes overnight, but we used mosquito repellant, so it wasn't so bad. The room was even less than we had expected, although tidy, everything had a worn out feel. The shades didn't completely cover the window, the ventilation was poor, especially without air conditioning. From what other people have written, the bungalows seem to be a better overall choice.

On the positive side, the grounds were nicely kept, the people were nice, there was a good sized parking lot (enough for about 8 SUV's) and the pool looked especially inviting. There were even monkeys in the trees above us which added a nice touch. The place was far enough from the center of town to be away from the noise, but just across the street from the beach. There was a great restaurant right across the street too (playa des artistes) with great seafood dishes - the menus are all hand written because the menu changes by 80% daily depending on what the chef has available fresh that day.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "pros and cons"

Stayed here for 2 nights in beginning of January. I think if you stay in a bungalow it's probably a wonderful experience, but none of us would stay in one of the regular rooms again. The rooms are in a two-story long building nears the road on the property. Our room was a 4 person room. It was small and barren. Two twin beds and one full/queen. Linoleum floor. There was no air conditioning and no real possibility of cross ventilation. There was one stand-up fan that helped somewhat, but it was the most uncomfortable room of our trip. Though mosquitoes were abundant we made the call to keep the door to the room ajar so the fan could suck in some less hot air in the evenings. Not ideal. We had to put our mosquito net over the beds to protect us. The room did have a tiny little fridge that worked well (had to plug it in when we got there). The bathroom was pretty bleh, nothing nice. The shower didn't stay hot long and we had our first experience with a switch to "turn on" the hot water. The good bit was that it was pretty inexpensive. Also, the grounds were gorgeous and the little bungalows looked wonderful. They were spaced out from one another and had little hammocks on the porches. Problem was the bungalows only fit 3 people and we were 4. The pool was really nice and had some character. We swam at night. There were lights in the pool and no one else was around. Very nice. The grounds are well kept and mostly trimmed grass. My advice--stay here if you get a bungalow, skip it otherwise. The hotel is about a 10 minute, nice walk to the town on a dirt road. I'm pretty happy we didn't stay right in the town since it seemed rather cramped. I had been to the town about 10 years before and it had changed a lot. It now appears pretty full of disgruntled young Americans who are looking for a place to be other than the 9-5 industrial grind of the US. Many seemed parked in Montezuma. The strange part was, though this is only from impression and appearance, it seemed many of them weren't contributing a tremendous amount to benefit and improve the place itself but were merely camped and sucking up the tropical atmosphere. Just made Montezuma seem a little depressing to me and detracted from enjoyed the place. The traffic has gotten intense for such a small town. Lots of people selling wares on the dirt streets--the sort of things you might have seen sold around Dead shows with tropics flare--most of the vendors seemed to be trying to make money to keep them selves down there. The waterfalls are also just a small hike from the hotel. Even closer than town I think. That was really fun. We hiked up to the upper falls. The path was a bit sketchy but worth it. There was a rope swing and the water was warm and nice.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "avoid - unless you are an entomologist!"

stayed 7 nights and felt really let down. Every night we were woken by ants crawling on us in the night. children woke up to 30-40 mosquito bites each morning. no hot water. Interestingly the hotel makes you pay up front as I suspect they have a lot of people leaving after a shorter trip than you planned - of course no refund is available. Try El Jardin d'mour further down the road.

In its favor the grounds are nice - it’s a 10 minute walk away from the drunks of Montezuma, and the pool has a great view

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "totally relaxing"

Love this place. Amazing views. Cozy cabins. Great location. Yoga with Dagmar on the deck overlooking the ocean changed my life. Mango trees all over the property and little monkeys swinging right over the cabins. I've never seen so many monkeys in one place. The people are sweet. This was a true experience. One word of warning. If you go during the rainy season---prepare yourself for the occasional bug/spider in your room. There is nothing you can do about it... when it rains---they find their way into the craves of your cabin to shelter themselves from the downpours. This is not a reason o not stay here---it is like this every where in Costa. This little place is a slice of paradise.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "Dream vacation comes true"

We stayed at the Los Mangos for 8 nights at the end of January. Everything was as advertised. The bungalows were very clean and well constructed. The hot water only lasts for a few minutes but long enough. We used the pool area much more than anticipated. The howler monkeys move though the area and were a joy to watch. We didn’t get to participate in any yoga classes but wish we would have. In any case we would recommend Los Mangos to any who have a bit of an adventurous spirit. The Montezuma area has a lot to offer, just don’t expect a Disney Land level of improvements.

Hotel Los MangosMontezuma: "A tropical paradise"

an emerald in this tropical paradise, Hotel Los Mangos is run by the kind and handsome Greek boys of Montezuma, Nikos and Costas. Their rooms and bungalows were very clean and comfortable. I stayed in both during my trips to Montezuma. They even offer a shared bath option for those travelling on a budget. The rocking chairs on the second floor offer a great place to relax in the late afternoon to listen to the waves and read a great book. The hammocks on your private bungalow balcony were perfect for snoozing. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!
