The hotel is signposted from Paquera. 4x4 is not necessary, but is recommended in the rainy season. SURFING MALPAIS Hotel Tropico Latino, Mal Pais

Surfers will enjoy some of Costa Rica's less crowded and most consistent waves. Miles of empty beach breaks as well as numerous point and reef to choose from. The hotel offers surfing facilities, fishing trips, horseback riding and relaxing massages.

Surfing - Tropico Latino

Malpais’s location between the Central Pacific area and Guanacaste means that it benefits from both the big south swells which hit the beaches south of Puntarenas during the wet season as well as the offshore "Papagayo" winds which create optimum conditions on the Guanacaste coast during the dry season. Another great advantage is the complete absence of crowds; this area is one of the last frontiers of surf exploration in Costa Rica.

Hotel Tropico LatinoWhen locals refer to Malpais, they mean the whole area between Cabo Blanco and Manzanillo. The best surf is found on the following beaches:

  • El Carmen: Continue straight on at the crossroads to the beach and you'll see the peak right in front of you. A long right wall and shorter section left break over a gradually sloping sand bottom.
  • Santa Teresa: Turn right at the crossroads and continue 3 km. To "Cabinas Santa Teresa" and turn down to the beach. Santa Teresa tends to pick up more swell than El Carmen and holds shape better at low tide.
  • Hotel Tropico LatinoPlaya Hermosa: Next beach north from Santa Teresa, and even less crowded. Peaks all along the beach. When the beach breaks get big, the reefs and points start to work. Recommended spots are:
  • Playa de Los Suecos: Turn left at the crossroads go 4 km. And park where you see the fishing boats. Walk south 100 yards along the rocks and paddle out through the channel next to the hotel. The wave is a lefthander with a fast take off followed by a long workable wall. Gets hollow with size and offshore.
  • Punta Barrigona: Between Los Suecos and the crossroads turn down to Mar Azul restaurant. A long lefthander wraps round the point turning into a great hotdog wave as it moves through the inside. Needs a lot of swell to work properly.
  • Manzanillo: Turn right at the crossroads and go 8 km. To Manzanillo village. The reef is offshore at the north end of the beach. Very fickle wave which needs a lot of swell to work.
  • The manager at Trópico Latino Lodge is a surfer and is happy to give you information, advice and directions.

Hotel Tropico Latino “Tropico Latino the perfect getaway
New York
Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
Just back from 10 days in Costa Rica and our 5 day stay at Tropico Latino in Santa Teresa, Nicoya was the perfect way to unwind. We stayed in bungalows 7 and 3, both set in a lush, tropical garden with many palm species and lounging iguanas. Bungalow 7 boasts an ocean view but you have to look hard through the palms to see the waves. Still, it had an ultra cool stone shower in a bathroom with windows on all sides - just steps from the restaurant and pool, which blend into the garden atmosphere in a nature harmony way. The bungalows have comfortable king size beds and refrigerators..convenient for mixing drinks to take to the beach. The bungalows are designed to give maximum privacy, with huge patios and hammocks. The beach is just seconds down a pathway flanked by beautiful jungle-like flora. After walking to all hotels in Malpais/Santa Teresa area, I can truly attest that this was the absolute best! The food was delicious, staff friendly, and location perfect on a sandy stretch of coastline (most of the general area is rocky and completely unswimmable). We didn't try out the spa or the yoga classes outside in a thatched roof bungalow, but they looked nice. I rarely find pools that I want to swim in but this one was gorgeous and very clean. You can swim and watch the sunset over the ocean at the same time. We absolutely loved our stay at Tropico Latino and highly recommend the bungalows for a special, private, and relaxing stay in a secluded spot of Costa Rica.

Hotel Tropico Latino Hotel Tropico Latino: “Beautiful, Natural Paradise... would DEFINITELY stay here again!”
Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
I was really scared off after reading the reviews on this website after booking a beachfront room for three nights earlier this month. I ended up cancelling our reservation except for the first night, which we had already paid for... To my surprise based on the reviews of this site, we arrived at a beautiful tropical resort with spacious rooms, a great safe, and a beautiful stone bathroom. We were so happy with the place that we tried to see if we could stay another two nights (as previously planned), but the room was already booked. We switched rooms to a garden front one which included a price drop, and were pleasantly surprised again!

We didn't even have to leave our front porch to see a troupe of howler monkeys, iguanas, squirells, and numerous butterflies. And during my entire stay in Costa Rica and MalPais, I didn't see one "flying cockroach". Keep in mind that in all tropical environments, the airconditioning and humidity and going to smell / feel different than at home, depending on where you live. This place is beautiful and I would recommend it.

The restaurant is amazing and the food and presentation is very gourmet for the price.

Hotel Tropico Latino “We LOVED this hotel!”Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
I am sad to read the other awful reviews of this property, we thought it was EXCELLENT! Truly a special place. We arrived in the afternoon and our rooms were still being cleaned, but no big deal we decided to have lunch at the restaurant. The food and service in the restaurant was wonderful. In fact the entire hotel staff was really great, so friendly and helpful, from the front desk staff, to the manager, to the gardener and the maids. We stayed in Bungalow 4 and our friends were next door in Bungalow 5. The room was clean and spacious. There was a sign in the bathroom that said not to flush any TP down, so maybe some of the previous postings that mentioned toilet problems were due to prior guests flushing too much down. The showers were really neat and we had plenty of hot water. The hotel pool was really pretty, the beachfront location was outstanding, and those hammocks were perfect for a siesta. We booked a canopy tour through the hotel front desk and it was incredible. We had a fun time and the staff at the canopy tour was awesome. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. We all really enjoyed ourselves and were very sad to leave. We will definitely be back some day!

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – “Wonderful Stay”
Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
We had a 2 bedroom bungalow with a kitchen. It was very nice for Mal Pais. We had 4 different patios, one out each door. Our own private garden with hammocks. The bathroom was very nice and large, again for Mal Pais, and there was also an outdoor shower. We did not have a problem with insects in any rooms. The 2 bedroom has a kitchen, so maybe the insects in the last post was a result of leaving food out. We did have some crabs in the room, but we were on the beach/in the jungle, to be expected. The place was kept very clean. Going in and out of the rooms did track sand and dirt in, but the maids mopped the floors everyday. We found the house to be very quiet unlike the last post. It felt very secluded. Bring a flashlight, it is very dark at night. Very relaxing place. . Surf camp was not too far down from us. There was a wonderful massage bungalow on the beach. The restaurant was good. Staff was wonderful. If you are into Yoga, it is a wonderful place to stay. There is a yoga platform on the beach and classes through out the day, or you can do it on your own. The yoga instructors could also be found hanging from the trees with fabric doing acrobats in between classes. We were a big group so we also had a large bungalow as well. They are more charming than the 2 bedroom bungalow. The 2 bedroom bungalow is VERY secluded. On the beach there is a wonderful area with hammocks lounges and chairs all shaded as well. We were a VERY loud bunch and even hosted parties nightly until the wee hours of the morning. The first night we were concerned that we were too loud. The owner of the place and the staff assured us it was no problem. They told us we could be as loud as we wanted to be. Other guests told us they didn't hear us either. The maids were wonderful and very patient since we tended to sleep in. There is a store right across the street from the entrance, so you can fill up the fridge. The stove was a camping type stove. I believe there is only a kitchen in the 2 bedroom. When we left 2 of the people in our group were rebooking for August. You do have to pay cash. We had to wire money to them to hold the reservation. The reception will book any tours you want or need. We asked them for special requests, like private boat tours and such and they would call around for different prices and options for us. The only negative we had was that they only gave us 1 key per bungalow. When you leave the bungalow the door automatically locks. Of course the 1st night at 2 am we locked ourselves out. It took us awhile to find the security guards. They had no way of contacting the management to help. Ultimately they helped us brake in the bungalow and after that we never got locked out again. In the smaller bungalow you needed a key to get in and out of the room. We met many people in Mal Pais that came over to our bungalow and it was also the nicest they had seen in the area. Again Mal Pais is very remote and quiet. Don't expect a 4 star hotel or anything. There are many restaurants within walking distance as well. One of my favorites in Costa Rica is Buena Luna. Owned by a beautiful young couple from Spain and Argentina. It is an Israeli falafel restaurant. Best falafels I have ever had and I use to live near Dearborn MI. We were a big group and between us all we tried everything. All wonderful. They have a pool table and will do whatever they can to make you happy.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, “Beautiful Beach”Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
The Beach was perfect. The food was incredible and at a good price. The room was very dark and had no fridge. The bathroom had more bugs than I desired, but what do you expect when your in a bungolow. If your driving from Guanacaste good luck. It took us nine hours to Malpais and had to cross at least seven rivers and the worst roads I've ever seen. All in all it was nice and quit and a well relaxed two days.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – “Surfing in Paradise”Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
My wife and I visited Tropico Latino--April 1st,2004 which is the tail end of the peak season. I happened to catch the best surfing of the year. My wife was only interested in working on her novel and relaxing. The setting was perfect for both.

Mal Pais is a 5-6 hour car drive from San Jose. It's an effort to get to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais driving along single lane, pot-holed roads, while avoiding oncoming traffic. Mal Pais is a very bohemian location. If your looking for a resort Mecca, or tourist destination this is definitely not it. It's a sleepy, tiny little fishing village at the end of the road.

There's an abundance of wildlife such as monkeys, iguana's, bird's, and bats. Tropico Latino is a thatched hut paradise. The first couple of night we stayed at the far end of the resort. The room was very hot, and not to attractive. We got our chance to take the beach front cabin ($80/night) that overlooked the beach which was 100 ft away. It felt like the ocean was right out your front door. There's incredible surfing right out front of the resort.

Dining at the resort was incredible. The owner is also the chef. It's Italian Cuisine based on the local fare of fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables. Great Chilean wine is very cheap and is usually house wine. The pool is right next to the ocean. When we were there the average temperature at noon was over 90 degrees C.

There's also many great places to eat in town.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – “Peace on Surf!!!”Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
Definitely the only accommodation like it in Santa Teresa, you are steps to one of the finest surf breaks the southern peninsula has to offer. The prices are also the highest 100-125$ a night. The rooms are what you would expect, not that much, air conditioning and hot water, clean spacious, nothing fancy at all. Pool is clean and right on the ocean, restaurant is excellent. Only suggestion would be to bring lots of cash, they don't take any credit cards, and cash is difficult to come by, one ATM for miles, that only occasionally works. Only come here for serious relaxing and surfing, NOTHING else to do, but I LOVE it and will keep going back.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – “Everything we expected in Mal Pais”Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
We drove into town with no reservations and looked at several places. The lush landscape and quaint bungalows tucked in amongst the Birds of Paradise were exactly what we wanted. Rooms are all over $100 in June, cash only. But the grounds are well kept, and the place is quiet (of course the monkeys are not but that is all part of the experience).

Get a massage in the wonderful grass massage hut on the beach and be sure to try the yoga. What a treat!

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – "Perfect Spot for surfers, yoga and just chilling out!"Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
We found this hotel and our little bungalow to be the paradise we wanted in Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. We did morning yoga, walked on the beach, read all day in the hammock and had WONDERFUL massages in the massage teak hunt on the sand while the sea breeze and sounds overtook us. This place is indeed rustic, but we had no problems and found peace and quite (aside form the early morning howler of the Howler Monkeys that run wild with the many other great animals all over the grounds. The animals and flowers made us feels we were in a jungle paradise on the beach.

It is cash only. I think there is an internet scam online with the reservations as I tried to email someone other than the hotel who was taking reservations and finally called the hotel directly and had no problems. Check their website and just call them. They speak perfect English.

Note nowhere in Costa Rica can you flush toilet paper down the toilet. Maybe the other reviewer did that and that was the cause of his septic troubles. ALL over the country you have to put your used TP in the trashcan by the bowl. Rustic but it is that way throughout the country.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, -  "Heaven on Earth at Tropico Latino!"Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
We stayed at the Hotel Tropico Latino for a week, and it was absolute paradise. It may be more expensive than other hotels, but in my opinion it is worth every dime. We walked around and looked at the other hotels, and I can't tell you how happy I am that I picked the Tropico Latino. A lot of the other places look very different from their pictures online! Tropico is the best, and the owners really know what the word hospitality means. The entire staff is very friendly. The rooms are quaint and clean. The grounds are well kept and breath taking. The location is the absolute best. You couldn't ask for anything more. I loved the food in the restaurant, and the prices were very reasonable. Also, the receptionist is more than happy to hook you up with any type of trip or adventure, even surfing lessons (ask for Martina, he works at night at the hotel and he teaches surfing during the day....he is the BEST!). We also tried the snorkeling @ Tortuga Island, (www.zumatours.net) it was a great way to spend the day. I would also suggest bringing lots of cash or travelers cheques, because the hotel does not take credit cards and there isn't an ATM anywhere. The hotel does provide a lock box in each room to help you keep your money safe. Santa Teresa is the ultimate spot for surfing and hanging out on the beach. THERE ISN'T MUCH ELSE TO DO HERE! Like I said, heaven on earth.

Hotel Tropico Latino: Mal Pais, – "Tropico definitely worth a visit!"Hotel Tropico Latino Costa Rica
We recently stayed at the Tropico Latino for five nights. The hotel was wonderful, the restaurant was probably the best in the area, and the rooms were clean and charming. The only negative thing I would have to say is our last night there (we extended our stay by one night) we stayed in one of the rooms near the road. There was a lot of noise there, from the road, and there was definitely a smell from the septic system. BUT, the rest of our nights were wonderful (I would just avoid the cabins near the road). The beach is pristine and the hotel has set up some lovely sitting areas to watch the sunset with driftwood tables with Adirondack style chairs and hammocks suspended between the palm trees, truly one of the loveliest spots on the beach. Their gardens are absolutely beautiful, and the pool is definitely a welcome oasis when the Pacific turns a bit too challenging for the average swimmer. It was really a very relaxing stopover during our trip through Costa Rica.

Then, have lunch or dinner (or breakfast, if you've surfed early) and relax in the jacuzzi and swimming pool along side the tropical, plam thatched rancho restaurant.  The restaurant features North Italian and local Costa Rican flavors, with specialities preparred from the freshly caught, local seafood. A complete range of cocktails, wine, beer and spirits are available.

Comments about surfing Mal Pais:
"It's a great place to surf any time of the year because we pick up any swell direction.  The general shape of the waves are good and more often than not, peaky.  There's a beach break for lower tides and the other beach is better at higher tide, so you can surf all day.  The overall conditions are good, nice winds, and not a lot of blow out days. "

"The surf ranges from playful long board waves to high performance tubes, prevailing offshore winds, bath temperature water, lush tropical scenery and warm friendly people."
