About the surf in Santa Teresa:

Located less then one block from Beach Break Hotel is one of the best and most consistent surf spots on the Nicoya peninsula. The break consists of about a half mile stretch of beach that’s flanked on either side by a cluster of large rocks. Along this half mile stretch are a number of scattered A-frame beach break peaks. The two large clusters of rocks help keep the sand between them at bay, making for constant perfect sand bars. There is almost always something to surf here all year round, but the spot really comes alive during a good south west swell. Although it will break on any tide, it’s best on a mid incoming tide. The scattered layout of the break allows one to find a peak all to themselves even on a crowded day. If you are looking for a little change in surf scenery, a quick ride either by car or four wheeler can uncover some world class point breaks that come alive during big swells.

Other spots:

To the south of the break in front of Beach Break Hotel is Playa Carmen, and to the North is Playa Hermosa. Both stretches of beach serve up there fair share of shifty beach break tubes. Another well known break in the area is called “Suck Rock” located just to the north of Santa Teresa.

About Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa (9° 39' 0" N, 85° 10' 59" W) is a small, but fast growing town in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. Like other coastal villages on the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa started as a remote fishing village. In the early 1990’s, the town of Santa Teresa was discovered by low budget tourists and started growing since then.

Santa Teresa is stretched over 5km of dirt road. It is known for gold-grey beaches, good surf conditions and a relaxing atmosphere. Although bars and pubs offer some night activities, Santa Teresa is more popular for it surf potential. The coast along the town as well as south and north of it shows different breaks and a constant swell all year. Many hotels and surf instructors offer their surf related services.

Public transport in town exists and connects to the neighbouring cities of Cobano, Montezuma and Mal Pais. Direct bus connections goes as far as San José. Car rental is possible, also for ATVs.

There are four easy ways to arrive to Beach Break Surf Hotel.  We will be more than happy to make travel arrangements for you.  Please feel free to e-mail or call us with any questions.  Gracias y Pura Vida!

#1  PUBLIC BUS

Arrive to the San Jose Intl. Airport and take a taxi or public bus to the Coca Cola bus station. There are typically two direct buses that you can take all the way to Mal Pais. The times vary so please plan ahead just to be sure.  As for now the direct buses leave at 7:00am and at 2:30pm and the buses take exactly 6 hours.  You don't and actually can't buy your bus ticket at the counter, you can just wait in the bus line and pay for your ticket once you get on the bus. The bus will arrive to the ferry at Puntarenas and the ferry will take 1 and 1/2 hours to get to Paquera. From there you get back on the same bus and arrive to "el cruce" or the crossroads of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. From el cruce you can walk along the beautiful beach for 25 minutes (2 kilometers) or we can arrange for a taxi to come and pick you up. Just let us know ahead of time.

#2  RENTAL CAR

Rent a car and drive to Puntarenas and from Puntarenas take the ferry.  You have to pay for your car as well, about $11.00 USD.  From Puntarenas you will drive through Paquera and then Tambor until you reach "el cruce" or the crossroads of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. Once you are at el cruce you make a right and keep going straight 2 kilometers until you see the big Beach Break sign hanging on the right side of the road. We are located behind Pizza el Tomate and Tuanis clothing store.

#3  AIRPLANE FROM SAN JOSE TO TAMBOR

Once you arrive to San Jose (Alajuela) you can take another 1 hour flight to Tambor with Nature Air.  From Tambor we can arrange for a taxi to take you from the Tambor Airport to the door of our hotel.  The taxi ride is 45 minutes and costs $40.00 USD.

#4  SHUTTLE COMPANY

We can arrange for a private shuttle to pick you up either from the San Jose Intl. airport or from your hotel in San Jose.  The shuttle costs anywhere from $35 USD a person to $180 USD a person depending on the season.  www.thecostaricashuttle.com
